    [Flist help] werewolf pumpkin search
My mom says that she remembers me blogging about this arts and crafts link which included carved werewolf pumpkins for sale and other Halloween type stuff for sale. (This may have been an Etsy site and the pumpkins may have been fake.)

I vaguely remember seeing something like this, but for the life of me, can't figure out where it was or where I blogged about it.

    Help?

    [links] jewelry sales
This is the paper that never ends. Never ends. Thousands and thousands of words, but no end.

Shortly I am off to celebrate the end of finals and the birth of a friend, but first I bring you jewelry sales. Beautiful, beautiful jewelry sales. Both of which will be updated, so keep an eye on them.

[info]kirarwalker and her father do beaded jewelry and metal jewelry, though so far this sale only includes metal jewelry. I can vouch for both styles. The beadwork is beautiful and detailed, and the metalwork is amazing. I've been wearing one of the metal necklaces and every single person who sees it thinks it is amazing. Sale here.

[info]elisem is at it again with another Shinies post. She has a necklace-crown in this one which takes my breath away. I love just reading the titles of her pieces, they are amazing in themselves, and the jewelry is incredible. Sale here.

    It's that time again...
As always, I've been lax this year about keeping up with everyone's postal addresses, so if you'd like a holiday card (cause I'd really like to send all of you one), I'd appreciate it if you could email me your addresses and I'll get them in the post as soon as I can.

I'll take addresses until the 1st of January.

I hope I hear from most of you!

    Happy holidays!

[law school] being a lawyer? sometimes awesome
Two and a half years. Many thousands of dollars of debt. (Being forced to survive freezing ass temperatures.) Finally, all my law school woes have a meaning: I was USEFUL and found a case for a friend. It was a damn hard case to find, too, mostly because the case I was looking for wasn't actually the right thing. But I found the right one and was useful.

    I like being useful.

I have this thing on Facebook someone sent me that says, Being a lawyer had better be awesome.

    Well today? It was awesome.(1)

    (1) Not technically a lawyer yet, so probably I should say being a legal researcher was awesome, but it's just not as catchy.(2)

    (2) I just disclaimered(3) this post of glee. I know what this means.

    (3) I disclaimered a conversation the other day. I can't remember who I was talking to, but I disclaimered(4) it and they pointed it out because I didn't notice.

    (4) Disclaimered doesn't look like a word(5) anymore.

(5)(6) Because it's not. I know, shut up.

    (6) I like footnotes.

    [link] awesome people
    Sometimes people are awesome.

You should go take a look at the video [info]texaslawchick embedded in this post. This is what she said about it: This is a video that was taken at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. I think it probably was inspired by that wedding procession video that was popular in the spring. It is supposed to be a breast cancer awareness video, and everyone in it dons pink latex gloves and dances around the hospital.

She talks more about being involved in healthcare work, which was really interesting, but the video is the absolute best.

    [life] full moon
Incredibly cool thing about the end of the 2000s? December 31, 2009 has a blue moon. I am filled with giddy warm feelings because of this. In fact, I might have to write a short short story to celebrate it. Another thing about the end of the 2000s, though maybe not incredibly cool, is that I am struck with the need to listen to Prince "Party Like It's 1999" which I blame on the fact that as a teenager in the 1990s, especially one who graduated in 1999, I heard this a lot. No, A LOT. At least once at every dance, party, and gathering of more than a handful of people.

Growing up, I totally thought we'd have flying cars by 2010, or better yet, transporters. Or we'd be living on the moon during this upcoming glorious full moon. Like how I bring it back, there? I once threw a fantastic blue moon party. I will again.

I think this blue moon needs a name. December's moon is, what, cold moon or something like that? And January's is wolf moon. (Damn straight I know that one.) So this moon in between those should be called what? Best answer gets a prize.

I just double checked this, but fabulously, while talking about the blue moon, I realized January's full moon should be on my birthday. AND IT IS. The first full moon of 2010 is on my birthday. This could only be better if it happened in 2011, because then I'd have a full moon on my 30th birthday which is on the 30th. Sadly, it doesn't look like there's a blue moon in 2011 at all. However, August 31, 2012, blue moon. Come party with me?

I love the full moon. (Yet I don't have a full moon icon. I should remedy this. At least I have a tag for it!)

    [books] Recommendations
It is one of those times of year when people look for ideas of things to buy other people. And sometimes those people want to buy books, for themselves or for other people. So here are some of the books I've read this year which I think you might like. (These books have all already been published. I could recommend the awesome books I've read which are not yet available, but that just seems cruel.)

We'll do ten for now, but I have a number of others to add later if I have time.

    1) Mayra Lazara Dole, Down to the Bone (YA)
I know I've recommended this before, but I can't get enough of it. I read it for the first time earlier this year and I've probably read it thirty times since, no exaggeration. It's an incredible book and Laura, the main character, is fantastic and interesting. I loved her even when she's being a real jerk, snapping at her friends or trying to fake being something she's not, because she's so sympathetic and vibrant and interesting. I absolutely adore her. She's a Latina lesbian trying to deal with being a lesbian, various relationships which are falling apart around her, her own ideas of about being gay, and so much more. Laura's best friend, Soli, is beyond awesome. I love the way family isn't just blood, it's also about the family you choose, which is one of my favorite ideas ever. I am impatiently waiting to read more by Dole, who is just incredible. I will never be done recommending this book.

    2) Jodi Lynn Anderson Peaches series: Peaches, The Secrets of Peaches, Love and Peaches (YA)
These are sweet, sometimes heartbreaking stories about friendship and love, family responsibility and being true to yourself, following what's expected of you and making your own path. I read the third one, Love and Peaches, this year, but the three of them go together well. They remind me of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books.

    3) Allison Rushby, The Dairy Queen (Adult)
I was surprised by how sweet and touching this book ended up being, and though it is a romance, there is a lot more about the internal growth of the women than about their romances. There are also some fantastic, fabulous friendships between the women. I really enjoyed the Australian setting by an Australian author, too.

    4) Grace Dent Les Bambinos Dangereuses series: LBD: It's a Girl Thing, LBD: Live and Fabulous, LBD: Friends Forever(YA)
I read the third book of the series, LBD: Friends Forever!, this year. These books are super cheesy and fun British teen stories about three girls who have strong friendships and who get into silly, often unbelievable scrapes which are such entertaining, light-hearted fun I love reading them. I'm also pleased with the way love isn't presented as something that has to last forever but can be this momentary sweet thing.

    5) Malin Alegria, Estrella's QuinceaƱera (YA)
I love Estrella - called Star at her very white private school - who is struggling to figure out what she wants from the world and who she is as she grows up. She doesn't feel true to herself in either the rich, white world of her private school where she isn't being honest with her new friends, but she also doesn't feel like she belongs with her family because she feels like they still treat her like a child. Estrella is a very sympathetic, interesting, and fun character and I found myself rooting for her through her mistakes and growth.

    6) E.M. Crane, Skin Deep (YA)
This book was beautiful and wonderful and heartbreaking and very satisfying. I love the cross-generation friendship and Andrea, the main character, was wonderful. (I do get tired of high school hate, but the story is worth reading despite that.)

    7) Tanita S. Davis, A La Carte (YA)
The main character, Lainey, wants to be a t.v. chef because there aren't enough black or vegetarian chefs, and the book has recipes threaded through it which are great. Lainey has a complicated relationship with her mother. The boy she loves twists her up. She struggles with her weight and her hair and wants to find balance in her life and ways to achieve her goals. Her relationship with her grandmother was wonderful to read, and the pain and joy and complications of family love was amazing.

    8) Yvonne Collins and Sandy Rideout, Girl v. Boy (YA)
The main character, Luisa, starts writing an anonymous column in her school newspaper which is supposed to be about the school's fundraising efforts (if they win, they get extra vacation time, but even more, their school is very poor and they want to beat the richer schools). The school is having its own competition which has pitted the girls against the boys, and Luisa and an anonymous male columnist are a part of this. As they write back and forth, however, the articles end up arguing about whether the boys are being sexists, whether the girls want too much emotionally, whether one side pushes too much for sex or withholds sex too much, etc., a back and forth battle of the words which gets more and more vicious. Because of the column, Luisa and friends become more involved with school activities and start dating, and it's all very interesting. Luisa has to face her own snobbery and biases against people, and it ends up being a really powerful story about secrets and consequences and the power of the written word.

    9) Jim Fusilli, Marley Z and the Bloodstained Violin (YA)
Marley Z is an independent, intelligent, good hearted, awesome detective who is close to her family and smart about the world and savvy and has agency and no matter what, doesn't let herself down. I think this kid is fantastic and I want to read more about her.

    10) Michele Dominguez Greene, Chasing the Jaguar
This is a really fun book about a Latina girl who develops psychic powers when she turns fifteen, so as she's preparing for her QuinceaƱera, she's also trying to learn to control her powers and solve a mystery to save the life of another teen girl.

What books are you buying these days?

And now to have some breakfast. Yum.

Just went through and deleted a bunch of old stuff out of my myspace inbox. Yeah, I'm one of the few that still randomly checks that site. Good to find stuff in there that made me feel loved, compliments paid, friends needing things and knowing they can come to me. Unfortunately I also found an old message telling me what I already knew, but it's in there, for the next time I forget and start wishful thinking etc.

Dad fixed my brakes today because my mechanic friend was sick. I had planned to take off to Champaign to see a friend today, but had I done that while Dad was working on my car I'd've been made to feel like I was ungrateful. Yay for Catholic guilt! Moving seems like so much fun, especially when I look out the window and it's snow and strong wind. Besides, it turns out I need to spend money on new tires, good thing I've been working all that overtime, out the door it goes.

I'd like to get ahead a little, for a few things to go my way. That'd be nice.

Apparently I'm okay when it comes to my performance review at work, I'm one of the few. Great, I do a job I hate really really well. Awesome!

I'm off to go and watch Shrek the Halls, hopefully it recorded.

My sister brings her kids to the gym when she goes, they hang out in the kids area and play.

Mary: Did you have fun at the gym today?
    Brendan: Yeah
Mary: Do you want to go again tomorrow?
Brendan: Yeah, with Auntie Dodie (me)
Mary: Do you like Auntie Dodie?
    Brendan: Yeah
    Mary: Do you love her?
    Brendan: Yeah
Mary: Do you want to marry her?
    Brendan: Yeah

    So Mary told Mam later

Mam: Well now Joanne, you finally got an offer.
Mary: Hey now, that's not the first offer she's got. It's probably the best one though.

Don't ya just love my family?

I decided the other day that maybe my Godson should know more about Christmas than just Santa. So I told my sister I wanted to bring him to mass. So she came along with Brendan and Ryan. She doesn't normally bring them because they run around like little demons, not very fitting in mass. Brendan decided we were taking him to the zoo, no matter how many times Mary told him where we were going.

They really weren't all that bad, I think it's because Granny tagged along too. I don't think she expected to deal with the kids when she invited herself to mass, lol.

Funniest part was probably little Brendan when he decided he just didn't want to listen to the singing. He put his fingers in his ears and sat on the bench with a very angry look on his face. Tee hee hee.

I can't bring them next week but Mary may. Good start I think, all in all.
